For the last year we have been working with Edible Estates to establish a Lend A Hand team in Wester Hailes, who have been lending a hand at community gardens in Wester Hailes. Lend A Hand supports people who are 50+ and out of work and or socially isolated, through training and volunteering opportunities in construction, landscaping and horticulture.
Our Lend A Hand team have been busy with construction, landscaping and horticultural activities across various gardens. They’ve not only built a tool shed for the Calders Green Shoots Garden, but have also helped build the Mobility Hub at Westside Plaza, and more recently Lend A Hand have been constructing benches and a solar panel platform at the Greenway Garden, and renovating the polytunnel at Canal View Primary School.
Our participants, many of whom have found themselves out of work due to ill health and can feel quite isolated, benefit from the routine that Lend A Hand provides, enjoy being out in nature, learning new skills and connecting with others in their local area.
