Climate Adaptation Routemap

In 2025, WHGC are worked with Edible Estates, Edinburgh’s Community Climate Action Network and Wester Hailes Community Trust to ask the Wester Hailes community what climate adaptation they want to see in the area, towards developing a ‘Climate Adaptation Routemap for Wester Hailes. The study was part of a wider programme which worked with four council estates across Edinburgh; Oxgangs, Lochend, Hutchison and Wester Hailes.

Climate adaptation could involve anything from flood prevention, local food systems, nature restoration, training young people for green jobs, improving green spaces, to preparing our homes for severe weather. Many of these things are double wins – they make our places better, as well as protecting them from climate change.

The project was led locally by a team of local resident ‘community researchers’, including Min Long, Esther Kuperij and Maryanne Jacobs, they were supported by Sarah McArthur from Edible Estates. These Wester Hailes locals were perfectly placed to run deliver the community research project; as they’re already involved in heaps of work in the community, and they understand the fine details of life in Wester Hailes.  They organised events and activities to get the views of as many Wester Hailes residents as possible.

The study was completed in May with an event at the city chambers where all the community researchers presented their plans to councillors officers and other stakeholders.  You can download the report below.  If you owed like to be involved in future climate adaptation work please get in touch.
