Canal View School Farm

The school farm project at Canal View Primary School provides a unique outdoor learning environment for pupils. Building connections to the natural environment through gardening, the school farm offers the children the space to grow, develop skills and connect to the natural environment. The two school farm leaders, Shona and Stephanie, are based at the farm two days/week working closely with the school community. All sessions are tailored to meet the needs of the children and encourage a lasting connection to gardening and the natural environment.

School Farm supports broader development of skills, encouraging the children to participate in learning experiences outdoors that are positive and meaningful.  Primary 1 to primary 7 pupils participate in sessions throughout the year,  in one to one sessions or groups of up to eight, with a total of 100 pupils in the garden every week.

Activities include:

  • Horticulture (regenerative and organic growing methods, seasonality, sustainability and positive climate action). There is a focus on seasonal growing including propagation, growing herbs, flowers, fruit and vegetables and orchards.
  • Outdoor Learning ( green craft skills, practical conservation skills and land stewardship)
  • ‘Field-to-Fork’ – growing, harvesting, food preparation, cooking skills and eating together.
  • Wellbeing (nature connection, mindfulness, creative nature arts)
  • Family days – young people invite their family members to visit their school farm
